The castle of Sigri

The Castle of Sigri, in Lesvos, as was the case with other buildings, such as mosques, schools, baths, aqueducts and fountains, was constructed by order of Kapoudan Pasha, Admiral of the Ottoman fleet (Karabağlı Süleyman Pasa), who also financed the cost of its construction. It was built in 1757 in order to protect the region from the scourge of pirates, as well as to control marine routes. The construction is relatively small, polygonal in plan with square towers. The entrance gate has an arch with alternating white and red stones.
The inscription at the main entrance gate was translated in 1997 by Englishman, Roy Lawrence, in his book about Sigri, and states: “We built a secure castle by order of King Osman (III), Sultan. May God increase its sovereignty and grant him peace in the empire. Servant of Süleyman Pasa, Admiral of the Great Seas, 1180 (Egira) 1766-1767.”
In the cellar of the church of Agia Triada, which was formerly a mosque, is found another inscription, which mentions the construction of the aqueduct and fountains at the time of Sultan Mustafa III (1757-1774). There was a resident army in the castle up until 1912, and an entirely Ottoman population in the town of Sigri . On 17 December, 1912, Ottoman rule of the island of Lesvos ended with the occupation of the castle by the Greek Marines. In 1923, with the population exchange imposed by the Treaty of Lausanne, the Turkish inhabitants of Sigri left, their place taken by Greek refugees from Tenedos and the islands of the Sea of Marmara. During its history, the castle also functioned as a prison, as did many other castles. These days, the structure is maintained in reasonable condition.
